Turn conversations.json into readable Markdown.

Choose the JSON file extracted from your ChatGPT data export. Conversion runs in this browser tab. Your file is not uploaded to Eren Labs, OpenAI or another service.

JSON only, up to 25 MB and 5,000 conversations. Unzip the account export on your device first. Do not select the ZIP or chat.html.

Choose your local JSON file, or try the built-in sample.

How to convert a ChatGPT export to Markdown

  1. Request your data export. For an eligible account, open ChatGPT settings, then Data controls and Export data. Follow the official export instructions for current availability and delivery timing.
  2. Extract the ZIP locally. Find conversations.json. An export can contain other account files; this tool reads only the conversation JSON format it supports.
  3. Choose the file above. Review the converted text and any skipped-conversation or non-text notices. Nothing is saved to a server.
  4. Download one conversation or a ZIP. Each Markdown file has a title, available date and speaker headings. The ZIP contains a separate .md file per successfully converted conversation.
  5. Use the files in your notes. Copy them into your Markdown editor or an Obsidian vault. This tool does not restore conversations to ChatGPT or connect to your notes account.

What is preserved, and what is left out?

The converter follows the parent chain from current_node to export the selected conversation branch. It preserves readable user and assistant text, including Markdown and fenced code already present in that text. It leaves out system messages, hidden messages and tool-directed output.

Images, audio, attachments and other non-text parts are not embedded. Missing or circular branch data causes that conversation to be skipped and counted in the result. Alternative regenerated answers are not exported. This is a practical text conversion, not a complete forensic copy of your account.

OpenAI's export structure can change. This tool supports the conversation-array format with mapping and current_node, a wrapper with a conversations array, or a single conversation in that format. It does not accept arbitrary JSON, Claude exports or Gemini exports.

File handling and privacy

  • Your selected file is read by JavaScript in this tab. The converter makes no file-upload or conversion API request.
  • The tool does not save your archive in cookies, browser storage or an Eren Labs account. Use Clear data or close the tab to release the current in-page data.
  • The preview displays plain text. It does not render imported HTML or fetch referenced attachments.
  • If you allow this website's optional analytics, usage events identify this tool only. They do not contain file names, conversation titles, message text or search text.

Questions about converting conversations.json

Can I convert the whole ChatGPT archive at once?

For a supported JSON file within the limits above, Download all creates a ZIP of every successfully converted text conversation. Review the skipped count first. The original account ZIP and binary attachments are not converted.

Can I import the Markdown into Obsidian?

Yes. Extract the downloaded ZIP and copy the .md files into a folder in your vault. Review duplicate names and your vault's existing organization before moving them. The converter creates a flat set of notes, not folders, tags or backlinks.

Is this an official OpenAI tool?

No. This is a free Eren Labs browser tool. It does not sign in to ChatGPT or use an OpenAI API key.

What if my archive is too large or unsupported?

Keep the original export. Use the local Python script in our export guide for supported larger files. If the schema is different, the script may also need adjustment. Do not assume that an incomplete conversion is a complete backup.
