Check your reorder point

Example values are shown. Replace them with your own demand and lead-time figures.

The calculation

Reorder point = average daily demand × lead time + safety stock, rounded up to a whole unit. Stock position = on hand + confirmed incoming − committed demand. Only subtract committed demand if it is still included in the on-hand figure; otherwise you would count it twice.

With 5 units sold per day, a 7-day lead time and 10 safety units, the reorder point is 45 units. A stock position of 30 is 15 units below it. That gap is a threshold check, not a recommended purchase quantity.

What this simple model leaves out

Seasonality, supplier minimums, order frequency, case packs, changing lead times and the timing of incoming deliveries can all change a purchasing decision. Use a representative demand period and choose a safety-stock allowance that reflects your business. Do not count a late delivery as stock available today.
